Black Coat and Summer Sun

It is quickly warming up here in Connecticut - we went from frost to 90 degrees (F) in the course of one week. I had Nya out for a walk yesterday and we passed an adorable black pit-mix in a white "sun shirt." Her owner was very friendly so I asked her about the shirt. She said that her girl has a terrible time with the heat so she repurposed a lightweight and breathable human sun shirt for the pup, and she found that it makes a world of difference in keeping her dark coat from heating up. I am very intrigued by this idea as Nya seems to be a cold-weather gal and her coat quickly gets VERY hot in the sun. Of course we avoid walking during peak-heat and I always check the pavement if we are on the road, but now I am thinking I might try adding heat-protective clothing to our arsenal. Have others tried this with any luck? I did some googling and it looks like they sell cooling-vests specifically for dark-coated dogs.

Sounds like it may be a good idea...?? maybe? I think because Pits are single coated dogs it may work well. Rottweilers do have a double coat...the undercoat, and the longer hair on top. I do wonder if it will trap the heat putting a shirt on? I do know Rottweiler people that compete with their dogs...and they do use the cooling-vests. They seem to work well. We have always tried to stick to being outside early in the a.m. or later in the evening when the heat is on. Humidity is also really hard on Rottweilers. The air may not be that warm ..but the humidity thick.

I had the same thought about the double coat, I know it serves a purpose and I don't want to mess with that. Maybe I'll try repurposing a very breathable/mesh white athletic shirt of mine - see if it helps keep the black fur from heating up while still allowing air to pass through. Will report back!
