Eating ash and sand

Hi guys,

Why does my dog eat sand and ash?

My 1 year old Rottweiler recently started eating wood ash and sand. I thought he was just smelling it, but he appears to be licking it up.

My dog is very active, eats on the higher end of the recommended amount of orijen original formula for adult dogs. He also eats quite a few treats, mostly dry liver bits. His diet changed recently from Royal canin puppy to Nutram puppy to Nutram adult, and finally orijen adult. He seems to be trim and fit, and is not gaining weight, but might be losing it. Any advice?

Sometimes it's hard to figure out why dogs eat certain things. The best thing to do is not to allow him to eat them. Does he know a "leave it" command??
Mine always wanted to eat the blobs of grass that shoot out of the lawnmower...especially if they were kind of wet and moldy. Why? Don't know.

Did he just start eating these items when you changed to Orijen?? Orijen is grain free and has peas and lentils, etc. You may want to go with one of their foods that contain grains? Acana is also made by the same company as Orijen....just less high octane. It may be a better food choice?

He started doing that after I switched to Orijen, but also that's at the same time as snow melted and revealed all those "goodies". He is picking up much more stuff now, after it became exposed. He is very good with "leave it", which is fortunate
In case this is some kind of nutritional deficiency, I was hoping someone knows a remedy.
my dogs eat sticks and dirt. Dixie the young one has a noise when she runs that sounds like a wheeze. But after going to the vet, all thumbs up. They are not wild animals but not human and who knows. They don't eat bad food, so nature is maybe taking care of itself

I don't think it's a nutritional deficiency. It's a well balanced food. It could be that he just likes it? Maybe there is salt in it?? Dogs seem to like sweet and savory flavors. My dog is now crazy for the spring grass...just the top of the shoots...grazing.

The wheeze Dixie has is from eating the bark, so says the vet.

Oh ash/charcoal is a big hit with our dogs. Same with dirt. I would be worried about sand though, I'm not sure how well that would move through. But I don't know.
