Hi all, I'm new to this board. My friend and I "rescued" Kiki
from her next door neighbor. The poor dog was tied to a 3 foot
chain outdoors all winter, and when she wasn't outside, she was crated
in their basement. Kiki is a sweetheart, all she wants is
attention and love from my friend and me. She's staying with my
friend for now, until I move to a farm, and then she's coming to live
with me.

The problem that seems to be coming up lately is growling. I'm
not that familiar with rotties, as I've owned retrievers and bassets in
the past, and my friend has trained German Shepherds all her life.. I'm
not sure if it's a territory thing or what, but this has been what's
happening:

Kiki only growls at people when she's tied outside (which I'm not a fan
of, but can't really do anything about until I move), but doesn't even
always do it. There are two friends of ours that she likes to
growl at the most...my friend and I had always corrected her when she
does this...but last night our other friend was petting her, and she
lunged up and yelped like she was in pain. No warning, no
nothing. She didn't bite, or even really lunge AT my
friend...just jumped up in the air and yelped.

I guess I'm just looking for an "is this normal?" and "how on earth do
I make her stop?" answers...like I said, I'm new to having a rottie, I
love her to death, and I'm just really learning about the breed.
Any help would be appreciated!

when tied up dogs tend to be more aggressive.Rotties do talk sometimes.I have a few talkers.

They are protecting what is theirs.Mine do it when they are in the Van in crates, anyone goes past the van and they get an ear full.

Maybe she is in pain.I would take her to the Vet and see if she is having any hip problems.Or any other problems.

Welcome to the group and thanks for saving her.

Hi geekiek , welcome !! How old is this little girl? I have rescued also and it takes a bit of time for them to adjust . I'm sure she still is in a protective mode being that she was what I call abused ! Give her time , love and patience . I would also take her to obedience classes, and I would take her to the vetssince I'm sure the people who had her didn't ! Likerutylr said being tied up puts them in a defensive mode ......and since that's what the other people did with her all the timeshe knows no better ...poor baby . We are all here to help with your new girl so don't give up on her . Their great dogs !!

Hi there, welcome aboard. Very happy to hear that you rescued one. I have two rescues of my own. Being tied up can cause any dog to act that way, not just a Rottweiler. There is something called " fight or flight " which means fight or run. When tied up they can not run so their only alternative is to stand and fight or in your case growl to let people know they mean business. You may also notice some low growling when off of a chain when you pet them. Rotties love to grumble when they love you or love being petted. It takes a while to figure out which is which but not all growling is bad growling.

I wish you all the best and hope everything works out for you. As everyone else has said, take the dog to a vet for a check-up and try finding out any history as far as shots etc so you can have that info for your vet. Good luck

Thanks for the replies! She's 2 and is licensed, I think only
because she had broken loose and was the owners were being threatened
by the dog officer... I talked to her vet, and she's up to date on all
her shots until November..I just can't wait to move and get her home
with me so I can work with her (one of the joys of teaching...summers
off to spend with her!)...

That fight or flight thing makes sense...hahaha, of course, when I go
over to her, she immediately flops on her belly and wants to be
rubbed...I'm falling in love with these dogs already!

I also wanted to add that she has never growled at me, or my friend who
she is staying with...even when she is tied. She only growls at
other people.

geekiek,

Welcome to the site. Glad to hear you rescued.... They do appreciate it so much.. Can't give you much different advice than from what everyone else has said. They alll have good points as you will quickly find out from being on here. I have learned alot and I don't have a Rottie. Will have to talk to you about your friend and training German Shepherds. I have one that is 4 yrs. named Zeus and is the love of my life. Love to get some of her input......

Update: So I brought Kiki to a high school softball game tonight,
and she was quite the little ham. It must just be a territory
thing, because out in public, she was an absolute angel! She was
all about being petted by every person that came along, no growling,
nothing at all to hint that she was aggressive.. so what can I do when
she's home and growling at people? Is there a good way to correct
her, or should I just tell people to leave her alone?

Growling at strangers could be a good thing as long as it doesn't go any further. On a chain or off a Rottweiler will be somewhat protective of home, car, etc. AND, time will change things. Once she gets comfortable she will change in some ways. Just watch her VERY carefully especially around kids. It only takes a second for something bad to happen.
