Wow - $544 for a yearly vet visit

Is that normal, or am I being hosed?

This is after paying almost $1000 a few months ago for neutering, tattoo, and checkup.

Sounds about right. :( Vet prices have gone crazy in the last few years. It's a reason so many pets are being given up. An average person does not have thousands to spend on spay/neuter and vaccinations and flea/heartworm medications every year.
I buy my heartworm and flea/tick preventative on-line. Way cheaper! When I had 3 Rottweilers at one time it was just costing WAY too much buying from my vet. Rabies is good for three years...so that has to be only given then. I don't get parvo, etc. after 5 years of age. The really don't need it and have built up immunity. The only shot they need by law is the rabies.

Good to know. Where do you shop online for vet meds?
It's atrocious in Canada. In Florida last spring I had Dixie neutered along with those other things mentioned in the receipt for $500 US.

I have used this company for many years. It's changed names a few times...and it's based in Singapore. Shipped quickly...no tax, and no shipping fee (I think if you spend over a certain amount?). You can get most of the stuff the vet sells. I use Heartgard Plus and Advantix. Heartgard at the beginning of the month...and usually the Advantix in the middle of the month. We really don't have a big tick problem or fleas around here...so I often just do the Advantix June, July, Aug.

It's pretty crazy. I think we got bravecto for all three dogs (none of them Rottie-sized, and I think it's more the bigger the dog) and it was well over $300. It lasts three months but even still. And heartgaard wasn't cheap either. I'm not going to lie, we skipped the heartworm/tick tests this year - none of them have any symptoms of tick disease, they're treated 9 months out of the year, and got heartgaard on time all last year so yeah. It would've been like $600 and we just didn't have the cash.

I know!!! My daughter lives in the southern states in the winters...and then spends the summers in their home in BC. She always tries to get all of her vet work and vet medications while in the states for her zoo. There is such a big difference in prices between Canada and the states.

I never bother getting the HW test if my dogs were on Heartgard and never missed a dose either. I only give it from May to October. This year I'm starting June 1st..it was a cold spring and I've not seen a mosquito around. Blackflies is another story...lol
Heartgard is a good price at : www.unitedpetworld.com Same with other flea/tick stuff.

Here in the nation's capital, the mosquitoes are out and look as big as those in Winnipeg..... lol
My yearly vet appt. cost me $389. That includes a blood test that checks for heart worm among other things. My boys are on heart worm and fleas and ticks. This vet will not give us the medication without a blood test every other year. I have asked why the blood test if they are on the medication but no test no medication. I will look for meds somewhere else next year.

I got bites in Algonquin (so close enough) a couple of weeks ago! I believe it!

It is my understanding (I recently learned) that heartgard works by killing heartworm little guys, it's not a preventative. That's why they generally recommend starting in June, because it kills anything picked up during May exposure. Or so one of the vet techs explained to me last year when I asked why I wasn't starting it in May.
