Need Help With Some Behaviors

200 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Hargreaves88
Hi my nephew as a 10 month old Rottweiler, sadly he as just separated and I am going round to help with the puppy’s care. I am wary due to size of the dog and I am not used to Rottweilers. He is good and they did have a bit of personal training before they separated but the girl wasn’t doing the training and caged the dog when he would not behave. We are getting him back on track and he is doing well now. He does jump the odd time and we learnt to say no and turn our back and he stops. Why does he do this ? Also he has now starting lunging at moving traffic, wants to jump at anyone he passes.

we were also recommended a training mat he should go sit on if we need him to if being over fussy and jumping? Does anyone know what mat this should be please?

and also what can go in the bottom of his cage that he cannot destroy to lie on on the odd time he as to be in caged a couple of hours re work time ?

thank you all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums! This all comes down to training, and more training. At 10 months of age this can be the most difficult age for Rottweilers...sort of the teenage stage. I volunteered for Rottweiler rescue for many years...and often this is when Rottweilers were given up to be rehomed. Usually from about 10 to 18 months of age.:(

He needs to be enrolled into formal obedience classes ASAP!! Obedience training should be done with him at least 15 minutes twice per day...and he needs to use his commands during the day. Look up NILIF and have him start following these rules throughout the day. It's basically "good manners". He should not be jumping...and if "NO" is not working...start walking right into him so he gets knocked down if he starts to jump up. Keep a leash on him that he drags around the house while supervised...step on the leash, or give him a leash correction if he starts looking like he's thinking of jumping. Work on the "sit" command..if he's sitting he cannot be jumping.
As far as lunging at moving traffic...that's his prey drive kicking in. Again...use the "leave it" command and give him strong correction for this. Keep him moving along so he cannot focus on the traffic. Ripping up the bottom of the crate may be that he is hot. Rottweilers tend to feel the heat easily. Take out blanket or bedding if there is any in his crate. Put a fan in front of his crate. He may feel more comfortable.

Thank you for your prompt reply. He has got the sit command and paw and did stop the jumping but it is creeping back in and we thought it was when he was bored and is trying to push to play but we were scared it could escalate as he grabs your arm , no teeth press into our arm but we don’t want this. It as put my partner off going and we think just visit when my nephew is in but as I am going to let him out and feed him etc I want more control. They only had 3 private lessons and were due for next 3 when they split up.

I am going to book more lessons as he as got it in him to train we can see it but like you say he needs more training and I will look into the NILIF now.

i meant he had a blanket in his cage for something to sit on so not as hard but he’s ripped it up . So now just sits on base of cage.

thank you again. I will be back with more questions no doubt….

He needs a swift correction for jumping up and for grabbing your arm. He needs to understand that he cannot do this!! How much exercise is he getting per day? How much time training is he getting per day?? Sounds like he needs to get more exercise. Only having 3 lessons is not enough. To have a well behaved, well trained dog...he needs at least 2 years of obedience classes, or some type of classes. This can be a pushy, dominant breed....if they can get away with something they will try. He needs to know what is allowed, and quickly understand what is not...you really have to be concise with them....everyone has to be on the same page.

we are back on track with him now . There was a gap in training due to his owners separating unexpectedly….this messed up his whole routine. My nephew takes him on long walks and he’s doing well with the training as they have a great bond but I want me and my partner to be able to go round and any other guests without being scared of him. We totally agree with you that we all need to be in same page with training and are going to pick up straight away with the training lady they had, they only had the 3 lessons when the separation happened but we do need this for his sake and everyone else. He learns quickly so I know he will get it we just need the proper training. Thank you again for all your help. I am going to keep on this forum as it is so good with guidance and advice. Sandra
