Tomorrows the big day! We will be picking up our Apollo
We are very excited, and I can hardly wait. I couldn't hardly sleep all this week from the anticipation! Anyone who has any tips to make the transition for our new baby any easier would be appreciated. I see lots of soft, squeaky toys for puppies, but I don't want to give him something that might hurt him. What kind of toys can I give him to chew on that are appropriate for large breed puppies? There are so many different collars, and harnesses out there...I went in to pick some up and came out empty handed because I wasnt sure which I should get. What works the best for a puppy just starting out training? Does anyone use dog whistles or clickers? I want to start training him right away, but Im not sure which method would be best for a Rott. I can sure use your guys experience right now! </BLOCKQUOTE>

I got Dally a Tire on a rope. I got it at Petco, they have 3 sizes. We have had this toy for some time now. She seams not to beable to shread this toy. I also give her empty plastic bottles(20 oz) to chew on. I have to watch her, she takes the top off 1st, then the safty lock ring, then the lable. I am not sure about givin the bottle to a pup. Dally is 20 months and listons to her comands. We also have a "MONSTOR" tennis ball. It is about the size os a soccer ball. The only one we have had she has not bite in 2 with the 2nd bite. I got Dally when she was 9months old. So smaller pups you might want to ask Donna. I do know the tire rope comes in a small size for a pup. We got the medium one for Dally.

Thanks Shell- I saw some of those tires at the store, but didn't know what size I should get. The same goes for balls....I looked at all kinds of ball but either they seemed too small (I thought he might quickly outgrow it and swallow it) or way oversized. I did get him a kong to chew on, though. Its the only thing I felt safe picking out...I really sound paranoid. dont I?
I got a leash, but couldn't decide on a collar or harness. I got TWO brushes because I didn't know which would work best...I looked at clickers and whistles, treats, shampoos, plastic poo bags for public accidents, (scented of course,LOL),toothpaste, my head is spinning just thinking about it! I went in with a list thinking I knew what I had to get, and came out with more questions than supplies! There are so many! How do you choose?

With balls I get what ever I know she can't get down her throut. They have Balls that are a couple of sizes bigger than tennis ball, But I never let Dallas play with balls unless I am with her. I thought I was being smart oneday and got her a ball with a nylon rope to help me throw it farther. 2 throws and that ended that ball.
As for Shampoos, I use oatmeal, Dallas has dry skin. But not all rottie need it. As for hairbrush, I went to the dollar store and go one with a lot of brislees(sp). I have tryed 3 kinds and that seams to work best on her, especialy when she "blows her Coat". You can find Knog balls. I think they are called air kongs. It took her a while to shread those too.

Hi Scarlet , have you got your baby a crate yet ? I think thats one ofthe most important things you can get your baby .As for toys the kong balls are great they have a hard time shredding them and the tires with the rope in it my kids love ! They seem to like a stuffed animal when they are babies but ya gotta watch the squeekie ( I take them out ) and collars I have nylon ones on my 7 month olds buton Kitty and Zeus I have chokers (not for walking ) just for something to grab on to . The babies will get chokers next time they need a collar. I love the name Apollo !
it's my little boys name to ! His sister's name is Rhea . Well good luck with your little boy and keep us posted !

I already got the crate. Its a metal one, extra large! It comes with a divider panel for as they grow. We are leaving right after my husband Dan gets home from work today.I have packed a puppy emergency kit-Towels, a sheet, wipes, bottled water, kong for chewing, film for my camera, snacks for the kids, my list is endless LOL! Does anyone use those car harnesses? I was looking at those yesterday. Do they work, and which is best? I won't be putting him in one anytime soon, I plan on holding him most of the way home, but for future outings I want him to be safe. I really like his name too! I think its so funny you named yours that, because I also considered the name Zeus!
But I opted for Apollo...he just looked like a Apollo. I chose a greek name for him...Apolloniusz(Apollon means manly beauty, Leonides means bold as a lion, Maximus means greatest) and I think he fits the bill perfectly! Can rotts shred the Kongs? Oh lord, another worry to add to my list, LOL!</BLOCKQUOTE>

Just giving everyone a update-We don't have Apollo yet. We were supposed to go get him right after My hubby got out of workon Saturday, but the check engine light came on. Now we have to take our truck in to get it fixed, and get a loaner. THEN we can get him. We didn't want to try to go all the way to Flint and backwith our truck acting up, with the kids and a newpuppy on board. So no new baby yet.
I'll let you know when we're going to get him.</BLOCKQUOTE>

I can understand that, I would cry if something like that happened to my truck too! My expedition might be a gas hog, but I wouldn't give it up for anything! The dealership I took it to gave me a CHEVY TRUCK to drive until I get my Ford back. THE NERVE! I try to hide my face when I pull in the parking lot at the shop. We make Ford parts, and I'm driving a Chevy! Yeesh!
We are supposed to be getting our truck back tomorrow, so we should be getting Apollo soon. Then look out, I will have tons of bragging about my new baby to catch up on!
