When Harley was younger, he was very...very mouthy. We thought we
had it completely under control to the point where he completely
stopped biting....but in the last few weeks he's started something
new. He'll come up behind one of us and either head butt us on
the back of our legs OR he will bite at our pant legs. He then
immediately takes off.......totally out of control ....spinning
circles and acting crazy. It's a great effort to catch him and
when we do, we put him in a down stay for 15 mins. or more and tell him
no biting. We never, ever let this behaviour go without correcting.
This down/stay used to work wonders, he'd totally readjust his
attitude. But now, when we finally give him the ok to get up, he
comes right back at us!!
Why is
he doing this??????? Obviously we're doing something wrong. He
gets so much attention, lots of play time, lots of outside time with
walks, etc and training periods 3x's a day, he's with us 24x7.
When he seems to do this the most is when we bring him inside (whether
he's just out to do his business or coming in from a walk) but
sometimes he'll just do it out of the blue. HELP!

Harley's Mama, You sayat times it'swhen you bring him back in from being out ...Well he still wants to play !!!..... By you chasing him he thinks it's a game and he's continuing it in side .... and getting his way I might add
...Don't chase him after he gets your pant leg, tell him NO and make him sit .Do you use a lead when you take him out ? Leave it on him when you come in that way you won't have to chase him andwhen hedoes bite your pant legsyou can correct him with out the chase .....He'll catch onthat play time is over ... always make it on your terms .When Kitty was younger she would go upstairs and get socks all the time and when I wouldgive her the commandto put it down and she did I would give her a snack ...well it became a game for snacks ! she would go and get another and another because she knew she would get a snack again !...she is a smart bugger as they all are
Well I had to put a stop to it so I quit the snacks , she didn't like that at all ! She would bark and make a fuss as if to say hey I got another sock where's my snack
I would ignore her and after a while she no longer brings down all the socks
the game ended...

Yes, we always have him on a lead as we don't have a fenced in yard. I realize now that he thinks it's still playtime
.......he'll
keep that little butt in the air with his head on the floor until I get
close to him then it's ring around the coffee table until I catch him.

I think keeping the lead on him when we come inside until he calms down will definitely help ..... I will try this.

About your Kitty....isn't it amazing how intelligent these dogs
are? I saw a bumper sticker that read 'My Rottie is smarter than
your Honor Student'.....
. This is true!

Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it.

Yes Kitty is right when you chase them it is a game even if you punish them.

He is a puppy and just wants to play, leave the leash on and stop it right away.

Hope it helps.

An amazing thing has happened! We left the leash on Harley each
time we brought him inside yesterday and again this morning. As
soon as I got my jacket off, he came up behind and nipped my pants but
I told him no biting, put him in a sit (only because I was able to step
on his leash quickly because he tried to run off) and he then walked
away sulking
......as if to
protest the 'no more ring around the coffee table'. Not
chasing him seems to be the key as you've said (I feel so silly having
chased this puppy around the table while he's just giggling at me)

Thanks for your help.
