Apollo is proving to be a wonderful puppy in every respect but one...potty training!

I need some expert advice please! I am getting desperate, I don't know what I am doing wrong. Apollo is getting so he will potty outside after much playing and running about, but I can never get him to poop outside when I take him out--I have spent all day outside with him waiting...and waiting..nothing! He seems to be holding it until after everyone goes to bed. I have tried staying up sometimes until 2 in the morning and he will not go..I got to bed and wake up to a mess-I can't catch him in the act! The crate just doesnt seem to be working, he seems to think he is supposed to poop and peein there, and every morning I wake to a smelly pup who doesnt seem to mind laying in it! I tried making it smaller with the partition so he only had room to lay down in there but that doesnt work either. So any ideas about now would be great! Why isnt the crate working? Should I try a different approach? He's only ten weeks old, is this something common with his age or am I just failing terribly? I know he's still a baby, and I'm not angry with him just baffled. What to do?

there is a way you can get your puppy to poop when you want him to.I do it to my dogs before I go in the obed ring to make sure they don't poop in the ring.


After eating take your puppy out side(you will need a book of matches)


light a match and blow it out.once it has cooled insert it into your dogs back end(I know this sounds bad but they will poop after you match them)make sure it stays inside and they will soon poop.


Do this before you go to bed to let him know what he is supose to do.When he does poop make a really big deal about it.Use a word for this such as potty or poop.This should work for you if you are still haveing problems with him going potty before bed.

So should I keep using the crate? Should I leave it small or make it bigger? I will definitely try the match thing, it can't be good for him holding it that long! Can I get him to go right after he eats or should I wait a while?</BLOCKQUOTE>

Always take him out after he has eaten and yes keep using the crate and if you wanna keep it smaller or give him all the room in there that's just a personal preference on how much room you wanna give him to dirty up, cause he isn't gonna stop overnite it's gonna be an ongoing process. Patience and perseverence is the key to successful training in everything.

Yes keep the crate ,Puppies need to go out side right after they eat,as soon as they wake up and right after they are done playing.Plus hundreds of times in between.


I always have matches in my car ,Some dogs do not like to go potty when I travel.It's not good to hold it so long so I make them go.If I don't have matches and ask,I always get "I got a lighter" and when I tell none dog people I need a match to make sure my dog poops,they give me the look of shock like I'm going to stick a lit match up the dogs butt.Non dog people I tell you ,What are they good for?

The match trick really does work I would try that. also the crate not only helps in housebreaking it also keeps you put safe and saves you house as well. I would keep the crate. Make sure you do take him out right after he eats and I always for puppies took them out every 1/2 hr to and 1hr. Good Luck

Donna , you are just full of information !!! who would have ever thought matches !!! now tell me why does it work ?

By sticking anything up there stimulates them to expell what ever it is and in the process poop also.Matches just happen to have rounded edges so they work real good for this.
