Training with an electronic collar

262 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  #5moose
Rolo just got a new Garmin Sport Pro electronic collar. So far I used the beep function (gets his attention well) and the vibrate function (not sure if I got any reaction). I did not use the zap function (I only intend to use it in a extreme situation, hopefully never).

My goal is to first work on his recall (currently not terrible but definitely imperfect - he likes to "think about it for a while", and when distracted, recall is non-existent).

Then, I would like to use the e-collar for fetching and retrieve training.

Question: does anyone have any good quality E-collar resources they could recommend? Specifically for retrieving training.

I have used a ecollar for recall. It's a great way to teach your dog to come when they would rather go chase the deer or bunny while off leash. For retrieving I think the Labrador dog people would be the people to consult. Rottweilers are NOT retrievers, and honestly I would not try to mold one using an ecollar. Of all of the Rottweilers I've owned they were never too interested in chasing after a ball or item and bringing it back. I think at the most I could get them to fetch maybe 3-4 times and then they got bored. This is a protection guardian breed...not a retrieving breed.

After finding an awesome trainer she recommended the e-collar. It has worked amazingly on Moose and our GSP Cooper. We didn't think we could have ever trained Cooper but it worked great on both of our boys. Our las Rotti would play fetch all day long and loved it. It's difficult with 2 dogs though. Try bouncing a tennis ball off the garage door, you will get his full attention. Good luck !!

Lol, ok, so maybe I'm overreaching here. But this dog has a seriously good nose, and with the little fetching / retrieving I've done with him, he has been good. I don't really care if he will become great at it, I just want him to try something that I can do with him outside of the skiing/snowshoeing season.

I have a treed lot with lots of deer, you should see their noses go in the morning. Their recall is great when they take off after a scent. One morning my boys and me had a staring contest for 5 minutes with a deer. Awesome experience for all of us.

If he has a good nose....then teach him to track. Tracking really makes them use their nose and brains...and half an hour of tracking...wears them out much more than physical exercise. I'm sure there are all sorts of tracking videos on Youtube. With one of my Rotties (Baxter)...I self taught him to track. With Jemma we took tracking classes...it was more formal tracking because I wanted to get a TD on her. She was an excellent tracker. :)

It sounds like you have a wonderful natural setting where you can observe the behavior of wild animals like deer. It's amazing to witness their acute senses and instincts at work, especially when they are following a scent. The fact that you and your boys were able to have a staring contest with a deer for several minutes is truly a unique and special experience that you will all remember for a long time. It's important to appreciate and respect the natural world around us, and it sounds like you are doing just that.
