Just curious to see what is the popular food hear. I feed Blackwood 2000. I have tried him on several different foods since I have had him. Each time I changed it was always to a better food. This is his second go around on the Blackwood. I switched from BW to Timberwolf Organics then back to the BW. For my boy it is the best food possible. This food shows the results. So what do you feed?

Brodie and our cats get California Natural Chicken and Rice. He also gets some raw foods such as chicken necks, bits of raw steak or hamburger, and some raw fruits and veggies from time to time. And he gets raw marrow bones weekly to chew on, they are great for cleaning his teeth.

Our vet put Dallas on Purina Healthy Morsels. I asked why not IAMS or one of the others. He just gave me one of those looks. I did feed her IAMS for large dogs. and a few days later i put her back onPurina do to BAD gas. I give her boiled beef or chicken as a treat for jobs well done. And some Cheerios when we are learning new tricks.

I feed Canidae,My roommate feeds her Rottweilers on the BARF diet(raw),My puppy Elwood is eating all raw.remember your Vetdoes not know about whats good for your dog to eat. They sell Science Diet.Bad food.If you look on the side of the bag and you read Corn in the food stop feeding that food.Corn is a filler it does the same to your dog as it does to you.

It is the bigest filler in most foods along with some grains. If your dog has ear infections alot look to the food first. The impurities have to come out of your dog some where.I got a dog that had been Old Roy's(Walmart)real bad food(if you can call it food)The dog went thur some real bad detox off this stuff. Her ears where infected for almost two months.

be careful giving to much raw meat to your male rotts though cause too much protein can cause a little to much aggression in the males. I'm not saying never give them raw meat just not too much.

That is like one of those urbun legends. What do animals in the wild eat?

They don't sit in front of a corn, wheat or rice field waiting for it to ripen so they can eat it.Feeding raw has noting to do with temperment. The lady she got her male puppy from has been feeding her dogs raw for over 20 years.

You can not just throw meat in a dish and think they are getting the right nutrision, you must feed enough bone and meat mix,she also feeds(tripe)intestens with the stuff inside.
there is also cottage cheese, yogart, eggs, they get canned fish, ground turkey. You really have to study to know what yopu are doing.I feed my adult dog food, but her puppy who is now 11 weeks has been raw feed all the way.

Their coats look better, they drink less water, and the poop is very little.

I don't feed mine raw, because I don't want to spend that much time in the kitchen,I don't cook for my self.

well I have been threw several puppy food for large breeds I tried eukunba, iams, science diet, and some other brands that it got to the point he would not eat or tolerate the food so now along with the suggestion of my vet he is now eating alpo and he enjoys it this is not what i want him to eat but if he is happy and content i am happy

I have to feed him at least 3-4 times a day in meduim size portion so that he gets the right balance nutrition sometimes I will broil hims so chicken pieces to mix with the dog food eating and drinking water fine

We also have to realize that every dog or puppy doesnt adjust to every food just as we do so when you find something that is going well work with it and just keep abreast with the vet if you see any changes but i must have to say since he has been eating the alpo he has been doing wonderful no gas his poop is good urine is good

I am happy and Im glad that terrah is happy to

i recently switched emma to nutro ultra and she is doing well on it.
she has only been on it since yesterday but she seems to really like it
and she does eat a little more of it than the other stuff. the pet
store told me it is the best they carry for dry skin and i should see
an improvement.

ive heard feeding a female raw meat is bad. is this true? ive heard it can trigger aggression with them because of the blood.

the guy at the pet store told me the same thing about purina Donna thanks for the extra information.

now don't over feed her.Use the table on the side of the bag. When you go to a better food you will feed less.

It will be a few weeks before you see the improvment you are looking for.

Yes ear problems do come from the food most of the time.

What did the rescue sujest? What ever it is it has to be better then what you are feeding now.If you switch use the food up that you have by feeding a mixture of both.Never switch all in one day,That could cause tummy problems.

Feeding raw will not make your dogs aggressive.5 of the 6 Rottweilers in the house are being fed raw,and three have been on it since birth.

What ever the side of the bag says for their weight and activity leavel.

If you are going to try a little bit of raw you need to start small.Chicken wings are good. You might need to chop them up a bit to start with.

Dogs love them(somepeople I know can't stand the crunching)My little guy Elwood has been on raw since birth he can eat a whole chicken leg no problem.Buy the wings in bulk and give them a few once or twice a week.

I got all the links from Stephanie and will post more in a little bit.

I'm glad I'm not the only person confused on what to feed my rotties! I have 2 male rotties, 1 is a rescue and 1 is from a breeder. They are both approximately the same age, 13 weeks, but Cooper (the rescue) is so very much smaller due to neglect and malnutrition. Against the advice of my vet (yikes) I feed them both yogurt once a week. Again, against the vets advice, they also get raw once a week; chicken, beef and last week a bit of lamb. I think it has done wonders for Cooper, his coat is beautiful, he has great energy, his eyes are bright and alert. Oz, my other "son", is a huge beast (30 pounds) that will literally eat anything. He also looks great, and is a happy puppy. I give Cheerios as a treat when training, and they REALLY like pigs ears. Apples also for treats, just slices, a couple at a time. Why is the vet so against this kind of diet? Also, would getting an OFA evaluation of Oz's hips and elbows be a good way to go? I have so many questions and not alot of answers. The local Rottweiler club here requires a membership fee to even post a question! Any advice would be appreciated!

You do not need to worry about hips, elbows ,eyes, until they are two years old.The heart can be done after they are 6 months old.If you are not going to show in Conf.then you should neuter both boys. You can still show in Obed.

Alot of vets are against the raw feeding. They sell Sicence diet what do they know about nutrition,

My Elwood is totaly raw fed,His mother eats Canidae.

I am only going to neuter Cooper, as Oz is registered and I'd really like to breed him. What is the optimum age for that? 1 year? 2 years? What is the average size for rott males? The vet seems to think Oz is going to be enormous, as he weighs 35 pounds at 13 weeks! He's not fat and looks great. I must be doing something right.

Also, what do you think about Schutzhund competition for the rotts? I really want to put them both into some kind of obedience training as well.

By the way the vet said feeding raw will promote worms. His exact words were: "Would you eat raw meat?"

Thanks for letting me pick your brain!Edited by: Monica

The breeding thing comes up alot.

AKC papers only mean that both parents were registered, not that they are quality animals. There must be a health back ground on your dog(parents should have at least thier hips OFA'd,and GR parents andso on)or you do not know what you are producing.Your dog should also prove them selves in the Conformation ring(good quality animal with no faults).I believe all Rottweilers should have a Performance title Obed,Tracking, herding, weight pull, carting or SchH.If you are not trying to improve the breed then you are just adding to the overpopulation.Everyone wants a puppy out of their dogs with no thought of the breed in a whole.

There are lots of dogs in rescues that need homes.

SchH is a great sport if you are willing to put in the time it takes years of had work and dediction to train a dog and obtaina title. If you do not have the time don't start.A dog with half the training is a very dangerous animal.
